It’s that time of year again! CISSA is hosting our annual flagship hackathon once again. This year, we present to you, Codebrew 2026: Cosmos Resonance!

CISSA welcomes all students, regardless of skill level, to work through an exhilarating and rewarding 72 hours in a team environment to experience the joy of coming up with innovative ideas, building new things and bringing your ideas to life.

Experienced mentors from industry leaders such as Canva, Twillio, Lyra, Atlassian, and etc will also be present to provide participants with guidance and offer expert opinions on their ideas throughout the weekend.

This year’s theme is Cosmos Resonance,

The universe does not whisper; it reverberates.

We stand at a remarkable inflection point in human history. After decades of looking inward, humanity is once again casting its gaze outward. Towards the stars, towards each other, and towards the stories that bind us together across time and culture. Cosmos Resonance is a celebration of that gaze. It is a reminder that at the heart of every great technological leap, every preserved tradition, and every hard-fought social victory, there is something unmistakably, irreducibly human.

Resonance is not just a phenomenon of sound or light. It is what happens when an idea strikes the right frequency, when innovation meets purpose, when design meets meaning, when a solution meets the people who need it most. This year, we challenge you to build something that resonates: with the universe around us, with the cultures and histories that came before us, and with the communities that exist alongside us today.

The cosmos is vast, ancient, and indifferent; but we are not. We are curious, creative, and deeply connected. And it is precisely that connection between people, between disciplines, between past and future that has always been humanity's greatest strength.

This is your frequency. Make it count.

Participants will be able to choose from between the 3 new themes curated this year:

Track 1: Beyond The Horizon

As the first track for Codebrew: Cosmos Resonance, we introduce Beyond the Horizon. In this modern era of constant innovation in the space race, there have been countless advancements made to democratize outer space and give humans a chance to explore our universe and beyond. In this track, we want contestants to showcase all of your strongest skills, whether low-level programming, machine learning, app development, etc. to develop a creative solution that helps solve a problem in the current space industry. This could be anything from software for spacecraft, modelling and analysis tools, to systems which support Earth such as NASA’ SMAP and Landsat programs. Recommended for experienced coders. Godspeed!

Track 2: Stellar Stories

For the Stellar Stories track, we want to give an opportunity to creatives to express themselves with a dedicated track. In this track, we want you to explore the topic of data and cultural preservation using technology and design a solution that could help resolve this. As we continue to progress into the future, the preservation of data and cultural items is crucial for current and future generations to learn, understand and appreciate our history. This track aims to provide participants with an opportunity to experiment with new UIs and design solutions to help preserve data and culture. Recommended for beginner coders or those with a good understanding of UI/UX principles.

Track 3: Shared Sky

This year, the Shared Sky track has been created for the hackathon purists and those who want to make a difference in the social issues of today’s world. In this track, we want you to research and understand an issue faced by Indigenous Australian and/or Torres Strait Islander communities then create a solution which can help to solve this problem. Contestants in this track will be expected to demonstrate the ability to properly research and explain their area of focus, then develop a solution that addresses this area of focus. Recommended for those who have previous experience in hackathons.
